They learn through on-the-job training and some classroom structure. An apprentice plumber does get paid for on-the-job training.

Know where the water shut off valve is located and make sure all members of the household are aware of its location and how to shut it off.
Plumbers, like all other companies, are required to be on time and act professional. If they have called before hand to notify you then, this can be overlooked. The work area should always be clean and free of trash and clutter. The cleaner and less clutter there is in a Plumbers' work area, the better able a plumber will be to make sure that his job goes as smoothly as possible.
Over the counter drain cleaning products offer convenience and effective results. However, they are best left to those who need to simply improve the flow of water, not those who need to repair it.
